Hey Marjory,
Thanks for your comment.
The course has openned up great possibilities to use technology in the maths classroom. I think more than any other subject, maths has the ability to use new technology to aid student learning. The edublog and zunal e-portfolio sites are a good start but a web-based BlackBoard site would be perfect. This is what i'm starting to look for.

Peter
I think your thoughts are great. I plan to use my blog as a sort of communication tool between myself the teacher, parents and students.

Not sure if I will continue on this one or start another. I don't know if I want students and parents reading what I have done so far.

I have started a parent and student page where I plan to link videos and interactive applets that will assist students with different topics in mathematics but when or if I get full time employment I plan to expand this idea.

One of the things we have been struggling with is when do you give the students the bulk of the diagram already completed so that they can focus on the mathematical relationships and when do you have them construct the diagram from scratch.

I might be tempted to give them a diagram largely completed here and then have another investigation to do from scratch as an extension.

I agree with your explanation of this difficulty. I think that words have many and varied uses, not just in maths, and that most kids can pick up on these uses. I'm not saying these differences shouldn't be highlighted or taught but I don't feel they can be blamed for the difficulties of 'wordy' math problems.

I agree that the problems the authors suggest are a bit lame when it comes to students who have a grasp on the English language. I think the author may have been relating the problems to students who have english as their second language maybe?

I enjoyed reading the second one more than the first because it actually gave examples such as the ones you didn't like! But now that I think about it, you have a valid point. There aren't that many homonyms and whatever else that students won't be able to distinguish between.
Anyway I liked reading your post! Look forward to it next week!

An interesting reaction to the second reading. I suspect that it may be written in a slightly condescending manner because it is aimed at primary teachers, many of whom are not confident with maths at all.

A very nice looking blog and your post indicates that you have reflected carefully on the issues. I think you have articulated the concerns of most of the group about how to use technology in a meaningful way so that the disadvantages are minimised.
